“Between Borders” takes viewers on a mesmerizing journey with three main characters navigating the immigration process, each facing their own unique challenges. As they approach the border, they encounter obstacles that forever transform their lives. Julian Nuñez, a native of New Mexico and the Writer and Executive Producer shares his personal connection to the story: “Having grown up on both sides of the border, we have firsthand experience with this familiar narrative. Our friends, family, and colleagues have encountered or are currently experiencing immigration issues. It is our responsibility to share their stories, and partnering with Canela Media provides a platform to connect with audiences who resonate with these tales.”
This groundbreaking production unites aspiring filmmakers, actors, and crew members from diverse locations, including Las Cruces, NM, El Paso, TX, Juarez, MX, and Mexico City.
Production of “Between Borders” began in late 2022 and has since gained significant recognition through successful screenings at festivals worldwide. The series has been showcased at renowned events such as the Las Cruces International Film Festival and XicanIndie, earning accolades including “Best Web Series” at the New York International Film Awards and the Florence Film Festival. Additionally, it received the esteemed “Best Feature Film” award at the 2023 Mexican American Film & TV Festival in Los Angeles.

The collaboration between Audpop and Canela Media was announced at the Interactive Advertising Bureau NewFront 2022 – SPICE IT UP Conference, where filmmakers and New Mexico State University Alumni Julian Nuñez, Alfonso Loya, and Tony Marquez captured the attention of Canela Media with their short film “De La Luz,” shedding light on the immigration crisis in the Southwest.

Julian Nuñez, Executive Producer & Writer
Filmmaker and marketing specialist from Columbus, NM with experience ranging from country music, documentary films, real estate, and digital marketing. Julian who earned a bachelor’s degree in Creative Media and Digital Filmmaking from New Mexico State University wrote and produced ‘De la Luz’ a film spotlighting the immigration crisis in the southwest. www.lineinmedia.com
Alfonso Loya, Director & Writer
Filmmaker and singer/songwriter was born and raised in Cd. Juarez, Mexico. At the age of 12, he moved to the U.S. At 17, he began writing songs and playing guitar, piano, harmonica, violin, and drums. Alfonso studied film at New Mexico State University where he directed and scored a few short films. After obtaining his Digital Filmmaking Degree he co-founded Cadence Films, a production where he produces music videos and short films. Alfonso was the Director for ‘De la Luz.”
Tony Marquez, Director of Photography & Writer
Tony Marquez is a cinematographer, film director, and actor born and raised in El Paso, TX. He has worked on a wide range of projects, short and feature films, music videos, and commercials. Tony, studied at New Mexico State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in digital Filmmaking. He is a co-founder of Cadence Films where he continues to tell stories through his cinematography. Tony is known for the cinematography in “De la Luz.”
